Search Workshops for Colleges and University Across the Nation

Because the search process plays a critical role in shaping our faculty and staff for years to come and provides the best opportunity for diversifying our workforce, it is important that we implement effective and efficient recruiting practices and address important contemporary issues of excellence and diversity.

WISELI has developed and implemented workshops that provide search committees with the latest tips and advice for running efficient and effective searches, recruiting excellent and diverse applicants, and conducting fair and thorough reviews of candidates. These workshops are relevant to search committees in all disciplines seeking to diversify their faculty and staff.

To expand the reach of these workshops to university campuses across the nation, WISELI is now available to visit other campuses. During this visit, WISELI can provide:

  1. "Searching for Excellence and Diversity®" – a search workshop for department chairs and/or search committee chairs and members on your campus.

    • This four-hour workshop is designed for faculty and staff members who are or will be serving on search committees on your campus. During this workshop, we will present the content of the search workshops we have developed and implemented on the UW-Madison campus.
    • (Important Note: This workshop works best when those attending and participating are actually serving on – or soon will be serving on – faculty search committees.)
    • Please follow this link for more information.
  2. "Implementing workshops for search committees" – a full day "train the trainers" session.

    • This all-day, “train-the trainers” style workshop is designed to help universities, university systems, and/or regional collectives develop and present their own search workshops on their campuses
    • During this workshop, we will combine presenting the content of the search workshops we have developed and implemented on the UW-Madison campus with discussion of such issues as the materials, techniques, strategies, and options we use for presenting this content. We will also discuss how the faculty and staff on your campus might adapt or adopt the methodologies, techniques, materials, etc., that we use. Finally, we will provide participants with the opportunity to gain experience presenting research relevant to the search process.
    • (Important Note: This version of the workshop works best if you expect that those attending and participating will actually be involved in developing, conducting, organizing, or presenting future search workshops for your institution.)
    • Please follow this link for more information.
  3. Combination Workshop:

    • AM: “Searching for Excellence and Diversity: A Workshop for Search Committee Members”
PM: “Implementing Training for Search Committees”

    • In the morning, we will offer the four-hour workshop, “Searching for Excellence and Diversity,” for faculty and staff members who are or will be serving on search committees on your campus. During this workshop, we will present the content of the search workshops we have developed and implemented on the UW-Madison campus.
    • After the conclusion of this workshop, we will meet with a selected group of faculty and staff whom you expect to be actively involved in future efforts to develop and present training for search committee on your campus to discuss “Implementing Training for Search Committees” (approximately 2 – 3 hours). Participants in the afternoon session will discuss issues such as the materials, techniques, strategies, and options for implementing search committee training on your campus. During this session, participants can also gain some experience presenting research relevant to the search process.
    • (Important Note: this option allows for the presentation of the content of the search workshop to a broad campus audience while targeting the details about implementing the workshop only to those with a keen interest in participating in campus efforts to continue offering similar training to search committees.)

WISELI is available to offer these workshops between January 15 and August 15.
