Visitor's Detail The following seminar is partially funding by WISELI's Celebrating Women in Science & Engineering grant program: TITLE: Learning Introductory Statistics: An Experiment Comparing Online and In Class Instruction SPEAKER: Jessica Utts, Department of Statistics, University of California-Davis TIME: 4:00 p.m. DATE: Wednesday, March 26, 2003 ROOM: 1221 CSSC ABSTRACT: With increasing college enrollments and availability of technology, many campuses are investigating the use of online instruction. In the Fall of 2001, as part of a larger study at the University of California, Davis, we conducted an experiment to compare a "hybrid" offering with a traditional offering of our large introductory statistics course. For the hybrid offering the class met once a week for evaluation and an overview, but the students were required to learn the material using web-based material (CyberStats) and a textbook. We examined differences in student performance, student satisfaction and investment of both student and instructor time for the hybrid and traditional classes. The hybrid course was taught again in Fall 2002, modified based on the study results. This talk will discuss the results of the study, and make recommendations in the context of Garfield's (1995) principles of learning statistics.
